The Jimmy Miller Foundation currently serves Marines of the Wounded Warrior Battalions at Camp Pendleton and 29 Palms with unique, year-round Ocean Therapy sessions.Held on base at Camp Pendleton, the Ocean Therapy sessions provide the Marines with an opportunity to learn to surf in a supportive environment, while focusing on the therapeutic benefits of the ocean, the sport of surfing and the supportive community surrounding the surf culture.
Volunteers meet at the beach at Del Mar Jetty on Camp Pendleton off the 5 Freeway at the Oceanside Harbor/Camp Pendleton exit at 8:30 am. Head towards the South end of the parking lot and look for a group of surfers, or people in their JMMF gear. We then help get the boards, wetsuits, tents, and all other necessary gear to the beach and the participants arrive at 10:00am.
*If you would like to arrive early to surf, that is ok!!!!
Volunteers need to have clothes, towel, and a good attitude.
The JMMF provides boards, wetsuits, water, food/snacks, and sunscreen.
Schedule: 9:00 – arrive at beach 9:30 – participants arrive, introductions, stretching, surf lesson, board/wetsuit selection 10:00 – get in the water 11:00 – first break/snack time and group discussion about the first session 11:30 – back in the water for the second surf session 12:45 – get out of the water for lunch, group discussion and clean up 1:30 – participants and volunteers say goodbye to one another and are free to leave.
